I’m glad of receiving many birthday messages from friends, some by email, other by phone calls, others at Google Talk, others in Facebook and even at Google +. Among those, one stood out.
I received an email from myself!
Many years ago I met a doctor in Belo Horizonte, who had come from a country city many years before. Very talkative, he observed that I was engaged, at the beginning of my life, working hard and told me an anecdote. Once upon a time he was walking home from college and ran into a professor, who asked:
- Where are you going?
No, I meant in your life. Where will you be in 5, 10 or 15 years?
This simple chat taught me to always remember the future. Look ahead, dream, desire, plan. Having challenging goals, clear and to the point. Nothing fancy, simple points which could be easily verified. And 18 yeas have been gone since that day…
Last July I ran into a service called Future Me. The idea is to send you a message which will be delivered in a future date at your choice. Interesting as it is, I tried it. Today I’ve been woken up by this following email:
Subject: Are you still in Brazil yet?
The following is an e-mail from the past, sent through FutureMe.org
It was composed on Monday, July 5, 2010, to be sent on Monday, July 4, 2011:

your goals one year ago were of emmigration. Leaving Brazil and bringing your family to a first world experience.
How is photography going? I hope you already have a “pro” equipment and that you are proud of your own pictures.
Nice to know what I’ve been thinking a year ago. Looking at the pictures from one year ago, I know that we’ve been to Caraça with friends, I’ve travelled to US, we’ve gone to Tiradentes for the day. Wasn’t it for the email, though, I’d never realize what I was thinking. Even more, I’d never realize how much my desires had shaped my current time. Today I’m writing this from my home office in Mountain View, taking pictures on a D700 and very happy with the results.
Future will be great, getting ready for it.
#tip: send yourself a message, fight for your dreams and rejoice on its fulfillment. As Proverbs 23.7 says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so he is”.
